Apr 05, 2018 DaisyDisk now lets you free up disk space by deleting purgeable space, the 'dark matter' storage that can fill up to 80% of your Mac's storage without you even knowing. What’s New in DaisyDisk 4.5 Extended support of the new Apple File System (APFS) on macOS High Sierra, in particular: You can now see the “purgeable space” the disk space taken by system backups and caches, which cannot be scanned, but can now be identified inside the “hidden space”. And you can now reclaim that “purgeable space”. Jan 05, 2011 - DaisyDisk now scans the local APFS snapshots and displays them inside the “hidden space” area. Now it’s much easier to deal with the hidden space, because the snapshots are often its largest component. You can now delete the APFS snapshots (DaisyDisk will generate a script which you paste and run in Terminal). Nov 28, 2017 Contrary to information on other forums, you can use DaisyDisk to delete hidden files, if you wish. Bottom line, if you don't 'see' a file, or files, that are obviously taking up space, I strongly suggest you try 'DaisyDisk' to see if you have some hidden files that are hogging space. Sometimes the total size of all scanned files and folders on a disk still don’t make for the entire used space on that disk. This happens because there may be some restricted folders, which DaisyDisk couldn’t scan with default permissions, or which are even entirely unreachable. DaisyDisk detects the remainder of space and displays a special item hidden space of the corresponding size.
When you click on it, you see a further breakdown of the hidden space:
Aug 02, 2018 DaisyDisk shows them as 'purgeable space' (inside the 'hidden space'). Even after 'purging' the purgeable space it in DaisyDisk, it may require some time for macOS to complete its background snapshot tasks and release the disk space. In the meantime you may see the 'still hidden' space grow temporarily. DaisyDisk is a paid disk space analyzer for macOS. It displays a sunburst diagram of files on a hard drive to help with the location or deletion of large files. It can display previews of files using Quick Look. It also allows the user to look at the file directly in Finder, in order to delete it or move it elsewhere.
The following items typically contribute to the hidden space:

Similarly, for HFS+ disks, you may need to use fsck_hfs. Beside verifying, you can use it to repair the HFS+ catalog file. WARNING: this operation may not be safe for your data! You should make a full backup of your disk before trying. Please seek professional help on the matter.
